Opinion Line (April 17)

A neighbor’s child came to my door soliciting funds for her school because the “bad governor” has cut school funding. This is wrong on so many levels. I can only shake my head at what is happening in our state to our kids and to our schools.

The schools want more and more money. What are they teaching in school today? It is obvious that very few students know anything about American history.

I’ll start getting angry about decreases in educational funding when this country begins to fire bad teachers.

New school formula, block grants, lawsuits, moving money around, raising taxes on booze and cigarettes, etc. All this shortchanging of our children and manipulation can be avoided if our governor and legislators would man up, admit the experiment isn’t working, and restore the tax code to its original status.

I would like to apologize to myself. By working hard and making decent money, I don’t get anything free. If I just could have tried a little less, my family could get many things for free. Wait – it’s not free. I am paying for it.

The latest laws to prevent people from using their public assistance on cruises and lobster dinners, etc., are nothing more than a smoke screen to promote stereotypes so the public feels good about eventually taking welfare away from the poor. They have a plan. Trust me.

I’m glad County Commissioners Tim Norton and Jim Howell are questioning this Comcare abandonment. I mean, is there anyone left to throw under the bus?

To listen to Commissioners Karl Peterjohn, Richard Ranzau and Jim Howell, you would not think we were part of the U.S., let alone the greater world of the United Nations. Regional independence is only good when local leaders develop better ideas and programs. I’m not seeing any creativity from these three.

Hillary Clinton, champion of the middle class – until the day after the election.

So Hillary Clinton is running for president. Apparently character doesn’t count if you’re a Democrat.

I miss Jimmy Carter.

If you disregard the laws of physics when you fail to use seat belts in your car, or a helmet when you are on your motorcycle, you will probably be seriously injured or dead when you crash. Then it’s too late.

Is paying attention to the road even in the top five things people do behind the wheel of a car anymore?

To the young man in the tan coat who steals my paper: You can afford a cellphone. You can afford a paper.
