Letters to the Editor (Aug. 21): First Amendment, K-96, Naftzger Park

New Naftzger not necessary

Let’s please keep Naftzger Park as it is. Spending money for an empty football field (what the four proposals look like) is silly.

It seems that city government is out to change the general ambiance of the whole downtown, from tearing down Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, Century II and the downtown library.

The whole development of the ugly RiverView apartments was a bad idea, and what did we get? Something that looks like a strip hotel along Kellogg along what was once a gorgeous natural river view.

Look at what is happening with Gander Mountain now. Closing and leaving an abandoned building along the river.

Does it look like any of these developments has improved Wichita? No. So do not allow another project to mess up a unique area in downtown Wichita,

Pushing the First Amendment

“Equal Justice Under Law” is engraved on the entablature of the Supreme Court building. This noble sentiment contrasts with the violent racism we see in Charlottesville, Va., and elsewhere.

Heavily armed terrorists are not acting within the scope of the First Amendment’s protection of free speech. Moreover, these terrorists are not immigrants, but native-born American citizens.

I hope leaders at every level of government (including city and county), and leaders at universities and at churches will speak and act unambiguously. It is past time for noble sentiments to be put into action.

Don’t expand K-96, Rock Road

To the Opinion Line caller with the simple solution of expediting “backup” problems at K-96 and Rock Road by adding/creating a second left turn lane at off ramps: Your letter to the Kansas Department of Transportation was probably simply discarded. Adding such a lane at that location, without adding a “receiving” lane to accommodate north-south traffic on Rock Road, simply means two left-ramp lanes will be backed up. In that case the solution would require the widening of Rock below K-96.

Wichita and Sedgwick County taxpayers would have to pony up a few million dollars. Driving on West Kellogg at I-235 is an example of be careful of what you “wish for.” We have enough road construction already.
