Opinion Line (March 30)
When did science become a democracy, where the majority rules, while the minority is required to sit down and shut up?
Why does the Kansas Senate think it needs an outside consultant to find waste? I found $3 million without leaving home. Kansas has three state universities with economics departments. Assign graduate students (aka poor taxpayers) to the task.
All these smarty-pantses in the Legislature, Kansas Chamber of Commerce and elsewhere who are so eager to make living and working intolerable for us little guys don’t seem to realize that educated young professionals leave the state in droves at the earliest opportunity precisely because conditions are bad here.
Only people ashamed of what they are doing do it quick and quietly, and with as few witnesses as possible. Gov. Sam Brownback knows full well the new school-finance bill is wrong, and the way he signed it into law proves it.
Brownback is not waging a war on education. He is waging a war on unnecessary education expense, which is totally appropriate these days.
I’m a consumer with a drive to spend. I have not had a pay raise in years, and costs for products have risen. Any tax cuts dribbling down to me have been small. Give me some big tax cuts and you will see me spend. Let me be the job creator.
I’m not a math whiz, but something is awry. Westar Energy overcharges $38 million and will rebate each customer about $1.26 a month. However, it needs to raise $125 million and will need to raise average rates $13 per month. How stupid do they think the public is?
It seems obvious that the Kansas Corporation Commission and its staff are owned by Westar. How else would you explain multiple rate increases a year?
We can spend 15 years and millions of dollars restoring one plane and we can’t restore the Orpheum Theatre? Our priorities are all wrong.
When I see a pregnant woman smoking, it makes me think she should be arrested for child endangerment. It’s selfish and sickening.
Does anyone monitor the handicapped parking permits? As a 75-year-old lady, I take pride that I do not need one yet, and it really chaps my hide to see the young and healthy using handicapped parking spaces.
While WSU fans have much for which to be thankful, this fan is especially grateful to The Eagle’s sportswriters for the outstanding coverage of the teams, players, games and history, to The Eagle photographers. Slam-dunk victory.
