Could GOP’s 76-year winning streak in Kansas be at risk?
One reason the national pundits are stunned by the apparent vulnerability of Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., is that the Kansas Republican Party has had by far the longest winning streak in the U.S. Senate, having knocked off one Democrat after another since ousting Sen. George McGill in 1938. The second-longest streak, 56 years, belongs to West Virginia Democrats and seems likely to end in January. Hawaii’s Democrats and Utah’s and Wyoming’s Republicans have had their own holds on those states’ Senate seats since the 1970s. – Rhonda Holman
