Opinion Line (March 23)

Once again, President Obama offers an inane idea like mandatory voting to distract everyone from real issues, and it works. When will we learn to ignore the foolishness and focus on real solutions to real problems?

Obama said he wants to see a 30-second shot clock in college basketball. If the NCAA refuses to make that change, does that make it racist?

The 400 pages of Obama-FCC regulations on “net neutrality” have the very real potential to end free speech, which is part of Obama’s goal of fundamentally transforming America.

Colin Powell said he used his own e-mail when he was secretary of state and many messages weren’t saved, but he is a Republican so apparently that makes it OK.

The Democrats must find a candidate with at least the integrity and intelligence of President Truman if our economy and democracy are to survive. History shows that he had few peers in his party.

Our gallant, Christians-in-name-only legislators have given the richest 300,000 or so Kansans a free tax ride on the backs of the poorest schools and students.

Next time you see your legislators, ask them if they pay state income tax for their real jobs.

State employees are just now feeling the effect of the micro-mismanagement by the Legislature that the teachers of Kansas have been experiencing for the past several years.

Thank you, Kansas Senate, for protecting public employees from being pressured and forced to sign and turn in payroll-deduction forms for groups like United Way. If I want to give, I don’t need my employer telling me what percentage is appropriate.

Justifying the unlicensed, untrained carrying of guns for everyone because “criminals are carrying and don’t have licenses” negates law enforcement’s opportunity to take some of the bad guys off the street because they are found to be armed but unlicensed and untrained. Again our Legislature shoots itself in the foot.

I too support a Wichita aquarium. But let us make it big enough to hold the Kansas Legislature so we can see what it is really up to.

The next time you think you don’t have time to wait at a stop sign or stop for a yellow or red light, ask yourself: “Do I have time to sit in prison for vehicular homicide?”

Using the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop to lend integrity to a business should not be allowed.
