The Wichita City Council was smart to pull out the VIP part of the $250,000 plan for an airport celebration for more scrutiny Tuesday. The opening of the state-of-the-art $200 million terminal at the newly renamed Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport is a historic moment worthy of community celebration. But the overall price tag sounds rich, even though the April festivities are to be funded in part by sponsorships, donations and ticket sales. Especially after having taken heat over the modest expenses involved in renaming the airport to give Kansas’ only U.S. president some overdue recognition in Wichita, city leaders need to be sure taxpayers don’t perceive them as blowing big bucks on an exclusive gala. – Rhonda Holman
