Suicide a wake-up call on what politics has become?

The suicide of Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich is casting a harsh light on ugly campaigning and the influence of big money in the Missouri Republican Party. Schweich, who was a candidate in the GOP gubernatorial primary, had been the target of misinformation on social media and a nasty radio ad that mocked his physical appearance. Also, the state GOP chairman allegedly spread a false rumor that Schweich was Jewish. Republican state Sen. Mike Parson denounced how opposition researchers and shadowy political committees smear the reputation of candidates with “totally misleading statements, outright lies and propaganda.” Former U.S. Sen. John Danforth lamented that Schweich’s death “is the natural consequence of what politics has become.” – Phillip Brownlee
