After much hand-wringing, Sedgwick County commissioners reluctantly decided to apply for a nearly $1 million federal grant to fill six empty firefighter slots. To most people, this is a no-brainer – of course we should apply. The city of Wichita already received such a grant. But three of the commissioners have opposed other grants, citing concerns about the federal deficit or federal intervention. So they had to bend themselves into pretzels Wednesday, conditioning their vote on working for the next few months to consider locally funded alternatives. Well, at least they showed they are a little flexible. – Phillip Brownlee
