Good for the Wichita school board for recognizing its error and scheduling an open meeting Thursday. The board initially said it would meet in a closed-door session to discuss the qualities it wants in a new superintendent and to hash out the process for replacing John Allison, who recently accepted the top job at Olathe public schools. But the district and the board realized that state law requires such a discussion to be in an open meeting. As the replacement process continues, the board should continue to be as open as possible. Kudos also to the South Central Kansas Legislative Delegation for changing its initial plan and allowing the public to speak directly to lawmakers at a forum Wednesday night, rather than having to submit written questions. – Phillip Brownlee
