Ward won KanCare expansion a hearing

Associated Press

Credit is due Rep. Jim Ward, D-Wichita, for getting a commitment by GOP leaders to allow a hearing on KanCare expansion. In one of his signature gambits on the House floor, Ward offered an amendment Thursday that would have led to the full House voting on Medicaid expansion outright. The agreement to hold a hearing later in the session prompted Ward to withdraw his amendment. That long-sought hearing should allow for consideration of the Kansas Hospital Association’s proposed Kansas-based solution to Medicaid expansion. Changing the eligibility would bring Kansas hospitals and providers much-needed federal funding ($2.2 billion by 2020, offsetting Affordable Care Act cuts) while newly insuring about 150,000 low-income Kansans. – Rhonda Holman
