Letters on voter suppression, unfinished roadwork
Sun shining brighter in other states
Unlike Gov. Sam Brownback and our self-appointed guardian of voter fraud, Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who still wants to proceed with voter suppression efforts in spite of a series of setbacks from the courts, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon recently vetoed Republican-backed legislation similar to Kansas’ voter ID law.
Nixon stated the obvious – that the measure would make it harder to vote, particularly for older voters, people with disabilities and minority voters, and isn’t needed. He noted that such policies are sometimes “motivated by an attempt to suppress turnout among certain classes of voters.”
Meanwhile, the governor of Arkansas is trying to decide how to deal with a $177.4 million surplus for this past fiscal year. The Legislature is considering returning some of it to the taxpayers. Of course it was a lot hotter there, with the sun shining so much brighter and all.

Finish roadwork
It has been seven months since any work was done on 53rd Street North between Broadway and Hydraulic. The cones have been in place, the speed limit was lowered to 30 mph, and there has been one-lane traffic in both directions. The road surface available to drive on is riddled with potholes, patched and unpatched.
They started out modifying the medians but haven’t even finished them. There is rock piled at the end of at least two. The only thing that has been done in the past seven months was a driveway into the businesses on the south side of 53rd.
If this project is not going to be worked on and finished anytime soon, why is it necessary to have a construction zone? The last road project in this same area was also prolonged.
