Letters on state legislators, quoting a socialist, Shockers

Have legislators come to their senses? No

Our legislators have begun opposing Gov. Sam Brownback on some issues (“Veto override attempt exposes rift in GOP,” March 11 Eagle). After years of unquestioning support, have they finally come to their senses? Of course not.

It is obvious that with elections coming soon, they think it best to distance themselves from a governor who has done so much damage to Kansas. Once these legislators are re-elected, they will again support Brownback’s failed policies and continue to devise more harmful policies of their own. Voters: Don’t be fooled.

Quoting a socialist?

Sedgwick County Commissioner Karl Peterjohn should dig a little deeper when pulling George Orwell quotes off the Internet, such as when he used the (disputed) quote: “Telling the truth in a time of universal deceit is considered a revolutionary act” (“Commission split over wide-ranging speeches,” March 20 Eagle). Orwell wrote in 1937: “I have seen wonderful things and at last really believe in socialism.”

Who is Peterjohn going to quote next – Bernie Sanders or Karl Marx?

Feels like Sweet 16

Traveling 1,500 miles and playing three basketball games in 87 hours, Wichita State University beat an 11th seed team by 20 points and a sixth seed by 10 points. In our book, this puts the Shockers in the Sweet 16, at least in the hearts of fans. WSU almost had a third win against a third seed after being down 21 points.

This wasn’t what the team hoped for, but it set the bar very high with its success the past several years. A big “thank you” to this year’s seniors for the joy and excitement they have brought while playing at WSU – and for being positive role models for the university and community. They will be leaving WSU to make this same impact on the rest of the world, but they will always be a part of Shocker Nation.

We remain optimistic for the future of WSU basketball, as we see the potential of the underclassmen and know that coach Gregg Marshall will build them into a great team and great young men.
