Letters on DARK Act, Middle East mess, stopping presses

‘DARK Act’ selling out public and farmers

I am amazed that our congressmen in Washington, D.C., are trying to sell out our people and farmers with the “DARK Act.”

Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., pushed a bill, which was blocked in the Senate Wednesday, that would prevent states from requiring labeling that genetically modified organisms are in their food.

California is about to label the main herbicide used in GMO production a carcinogen, and this stays in the food we eat.

More amazing, almost 40 countries will not buy our grain because of GMOs. I have farmland and have watched the price of grain plummet in part because, even though I refuse to grow GMO crops, other countries won’t buy grain from us without a labeling law in place.

I, for one, cannot imagine how the Senate Agriculture Committee even considered such a bill.

Middle East mess

Our nation is in dire need of a potent injection of reality and common sense.

After spending far too much treasure and blood in the Middle East, it is in much greater disarray now than when we first intruded there, and yet we continue to be suckered into the mess in which we scarcely know who is friend or foe.

We hear glib boasts that we will defeat and destroy ISIS, something that can never happen. Neither ISIS nor any of the other terrorist groups will ever surrender and be willing to sit down at a traditional treaty table to hammer out the terms for peace.

We should leave them alone to fuss among themselves, a preoccupation with which they have had 14 centuries of experience.

Sad to hear presses stop

The presses will soon stop for good (“Eagle to transfer printing to Kansas City Star,” March 15 Business). I understand the high cost of maintaining huge printing presses and the manpower to run them. But it is still sad to hear that about 75 of our hardworking, taxpaying citizens will lose their jobs. I hope the McClatchy Co. will work hard to find good-paying jobs for its soon-to-be former employees. I’d like to read those stories in my morning Eagle.

I truly appreciate each and every person who makes it possible for my morning newspaper to still be delivered to my front door – so that I may sit in my easy chair with my morning cup of Joe and choose to read the good news The Eagle shares with our community.

But it is still hard to hear the presses stop.
