Letters on KU financing plan, sex ed

Criticism of KU finance plan is misplaced

We were disappointed to see criticism of the University of Kansas’ financing plan for urgently needed facilities at KU (Feb. 2 Eagle). Gov. Sam Brownback asked KU to find ways to finance programs without additional state funds. KU did exactly that, but now some in Topeka are critical and trying to prevent this type of future financing.

KU followed the law when it sought funding for these buildings and made a cost-effective investment in its future. The university will use revenue generated by the new facilities, along with tuition from increased enrollment, to pay back the bonds.

The Legislature should not seek to prevent KU, and other state universities, from using this type of funding.

More than 30 states have passed laws encouraging this type of financing, and the Kansas legislators are completely alone in threatening to prevent it. To block this type of financing signals to the nation that Kansas is closed for business.

KU innovative

The University of Kansas should be congratulated on its innovative approach to financing $330 million worth of capital improvements. As for House Speaker Ray Merrick, R-Stilwell, and other GOP lawmakers: I cannot believe they are actually pursuing legislation to prevent state universities from trying to become more financially self-sufficient by issuing bonds (Feb. 5 Eagle). This is America. It’s a capitalist society.

Sex-ed lesson plan

The teachers unions and politicians are getting terribly excited over something that is simple to straighten out (“Bill would enable teacher prosecutions,” Feb. 3 Eagle).

The lesson plan for a Kansas sex education is: People who want babies order them from Amazon. Remote-control helicopters are still not allowed, so delivery is made by storks. And sexually transmitted diseases should never be mentioned, because they are God’s punishment for people who do not live by “our” superior moral code.

Because the last item is religion rather than science, it has no place in the multidenominational public schools.
