Letters on CURB, recycling, positive news
CURB members are in lapdog mode
Columnist Davis Merritt had it exactly right (“Will utility watchdog become a lapdog?” Dec. 22 Opinion). It is distressing to find that Citizens’ Utility Ratepayer Board members have discussed potentially damaging changes to the watchdog agency, which was created to give citizens and small businesses a voice in utility rate-setting.
CURB was not created to support the political agenda of those who oppose the Environmental Protection Agency and its efforts to protect our air, among other things. Nor was it created to protect the utilities’ profits. Clearly, a number of those Gov. Sam Brownback appointees (all current members) on the board are climate-change deniers.
They may not be public about their desires (they’re only “hypothetical”), but their ideology is apparent, and clearly they are in “lapdog” mode.

Recycle for free
I appreciated the article on recycling in Wichita (Dec. 27 Eagle). However, it was incomplete.
Although recycling is optional in our city through trash haulers, there is another option. That is to bring your recycling to PRo Kansas Miller Recycling Center, where no fee is charged.
It was mentioned that fewer than 50 percent of customers of the city’s largest hauler participate in recycling. Does that include what our center collects? Monthly we collect 90,000 pounds of the items mentioned in the article. Plus, we take plastic bags. You do the sorting with volunteers there to help.
We do need to do more as a community to take care of our Earth, and our recycling center is trying to do its part.

Find positive news
During this time of year when everyone should be thankful, we are surrounded by the negative. It seems that every time I open a paper or watch the news, I’m reminded of all the bad that is taking place.
Though I know this information is important, it makes it difficult to feel positive about almost anything at this point. Why not remind people that there are good stories out there?
I understand that news is there to be informational, and usually the hard-hitting stuff is in the forefront. But that doesn’t mean we cannot have good stories now and then.
During this time of year especially, I’d like to challenge readers to not only keep themselves updated on these sometimes horrifying current events but also take the time to find the positive in the news.
