Letters on taxes at Christmas, reflective vests, WSU football

Tax time at Christmas has social benefit

I’ve wondered why policymakers decided to have our real estate taxes due at Christmastime. Then I realized this helps us to remember that we are more blessed when giving than receiving.

Also, it gives postal workers a warm feeling of accomplishment when handling an avalanche of tax mailings along with all the Christmas mailings.

I now realize that making taxes due at Christmas also has a social benefit. Increased alcohol consumption always occurs during the holidays. With our funds spent on taxes, we won’t have money for heavy drinking.

You can thank our policymakers for keeping you from being an unsightly Christmas drunk.

Require reflective vests

Why doesn’t the city of Wichita have a commonsense ordinance requiring everyone who walks, jogs, hops, skips, runs or rides a skateboard, scooter or bicycle at night to wear a full reflective vest? You can’t see people at night who are wearing dark-colored clothes.

And where there’s a sidewalk, shouldn’t people be walking on it instead of out in the street? Why not ticket them?

I don’t want to hurt anyone. And I sure don’t want to be sued.

Mary Letterman, Wichita

Don’t revive football

Bringing back a football team at Wichita State University would be a no-no. Wichita citizens do not favor a Division I football team. The professional football team in Kansas City, Mo., satisfies football fans.

There are also too many financial unknowns. And for WSU, it is generally considered OK to not have a football season.
