Letters on climate change, abortion

Free market can help solve global warming

In 1960 the world burned 20 million barrels of oil and 7 million tons of coal per day. Today it burns about 95 million barrels of oil and 24 million tons of coal per day.

At this rate, the world will add more carbon into the air within the next 20 years than has been added in all of human history. This puts our country and the world at great risk for major flooding of coastal cities from rising sea levels.

I believe that our free-market system can solve the problem of global warming, but we will need to develop the political will to stop the government action that protects the fossil-fuel industry from free-market forces.

If we truly had a free market in energy, consumers would have a choice among gasoline, diesel, electricity or natural gas to power their transportation needs. As it stands, you need to be a customer for oil in order to have a reliable supply of energy to power your vehicle.

We need to reject the notion that the burning of fossil fuels is the only primary energy source.

Support carbon fee

In lieu of a carbon budget for each nation, we should support the carbon fee and dividend plan as a free-market approach. A gradually increasing carbon fee (as a cost of goods sold) at the source of fossil fuels and ports of entry can help wean us off these heat-trapping gases that threaten to make large parts of the Earth unlivable.

Can’t change climate

I believe in climate change; I just don’t believe man has any serious global impact.

Whether you are an evolutionist believing in billions of years or a biblical creationist, we know the Earth has had climate change since its creation. The Siberian ice bridge between Russia and Alaska melted away. The glaciers have been melting ever since the climate that created them ceased to exist. The Antarctic ice is thicker now than in the past. Mini-ice ages come and go in their cyclical pattern.

Climate change is real, and there is nothing we can do about it.

You think we can make the climate change? Everything we use existed on this Earth before we arrived. The volcanoes, earthquakes and storms can destroy what we make. The Earth can clean damage from nuclear catastrophes, as exemplified by Japan, Chernobyl and the Bikini Atoll. Humans are no match for nature.

Let us be good stewards of the Earth and not slaves to a 1960s political aspiration. Don’t live by political propaganda, but educate our people in science, history and logic.

Scandal was abortion

Did anyone get to see the winter finale episode of the ABC series “Scandal” in which the real scandal was a sick attempt to push abortion down our throats by showing one of the actors getting an abortion while the song “Silent Night” played in the background? It was not surprising given that the producer of the show sits on the board of directors at Planned Parenthood Los Angeles.

Abortion is not normal, as the producers of this show want you to believe. Nor is it the only answer. There are other options for women who have unplanned pregnancies, such as adoption. Women who choose life need to know that help is available at pregnancy crisis centers such as Choices Medical Clinic or a Better Choice.

If you are pro-life, donate to those organizations that provide services to the needy in our communities. Finally put your foot down. Say “no more” to the networks that push this agenda upon us. Write them letters telling them that you want good, wholesome family programming.
