Letter on City Council pay raise, global warming, revisionist history
City Council decisions were disappointing
I was disappointed to read “Council votes to change local campaign finance law, hike pay” (Dec. 2 Eagle). The Wichita City Council (like Congress) is one of the few entities in which members can raise their own salaries unilaterally. By doing so, the council showed a bad example by feathering its own nest in still turbulent economic times.
Furthermore, allowing political action committees and unions to contribute as much as an ordinary citizen to a political campaign will skew future elections by further unbalancing the playing field. Voters are people – human beings. Voters live, breathe and make up a community. Artificial entities should not be equated with the same rankings and privileges as citizens.
Corporations shouldn’t have “human” perks, nor should City Council members raise their own salaries. In the dictionary, that would be the definition of a “conflict of interest.”

Adjusting the rules?
So the mayor and Wichita City Council ensured they are more adequately compensated for their stellar job performance (Dec. 2 Eagle)? They also changed the rules to benefit campaign funding, allowing labor unions, corporations, etc., to buy influence – further diluting the individual citizen vote.
If they are going to be so blatantly free with adjusting the rules, why not just run for governor or other offices we no longer control?

Global warming racket
Soon the people will demand a stop to all the wars being waged in our name, manufactured and otherwise, that the elite profit from. What will take war’s place? How will the elite remain in power? Global warming.
“It’s dangerous!” “We have to be protected!” And “it’s your fault!”
Only the elite know how to combat it, and you must feel guilty for your ugly American lifestyle. That’s a couple centuries worth of control. It’s a racket, just like war, and they need your tax dollars to wage it.
If there’s no problem, there’s no use for those in power. They’re always manufacturing a crisis.
Craig Batson, Goddard
Hold histories suspect
I very much appreciated the review of the “The Coming of the Terror in the French Revolution” (Nov. 22 Eagle). As a French language and literature major at a public university, I was fed the myth of the French Revolution being a healthy and humane victory of “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.” Having been educated about the wholesale murder (and worse) of clergy, conventual nuns and so very many other innocents, I now hold all histories suspect.
Revisionism is the name of the game, and it continues today. The glory is always emphasized, the violent and unnecessary excesses of violence swept under the rug.
