Letters on gun violence, pot smokers, County Commission ignorance
Feeding on violent entertainment
Yes, President Obama, we are numb to senseless violence. We are a violent society, schooled every day by what is piped into our homes under the guise of entertainment.
We get to study the twisted thinking of criminal minds. We examine the carnage they cause to special victims. There is no end to stories that conclude in a hail of gunfire. If that doesn’t satisfy our bloodlust, now we vividly dissect the gruesome remains. We learn: When the going gets tough, load a fresh magazine. Yet we hold the media blameless.
When all this indoctrination comes home to roost and one of our millions goes off the deep end, we can’t understand why?
So, Obama can go ahead and trash the Second Amendment, but he knows it won’t solve insanity. Why not take a chip out of the First Amendment? He should wave that executive pen of his and have the media feed us a healthier diet of entertainment. That will go a lot further for our nation’s mental health.

Responsible laws
I am so tired of people saying President Obama is going to take away our guns when he talks about gun control after another mass shooting. No one is saying that; we just want more responsible laws.
But even if it were true that our guns were taken away so our children could be safe, is that a bad thing? We all say we love our children, our grandchildren, our nieces and nephews. Don’t we want them to be safe? Does every family in America have to be touched by gun violence for us to do something about this issue?

Stay home, dopers
There is a problem with people smoking pot in the area of the Keeper of the Plains Plaza. I walk there for exercise regularly, and this summer I’ve seen a marked increase in this problem.
On Oct. 2, the plaza was very busy for the lighting of the fires at 9 p.m. I was standing near the Keeper talking with a large family visiting from New York. Their children were present. A group of teens (obviously underage) were sitting on the rocks overlooking the river passing around a water pipe. The aroma was overpowering. The parents with whom I spoke were really unhappy about this. I was embarrassed.
This needs to stop. I urge the Wichita City Council to discuss this issue with law enforcement. I am proud of my hometown and very proud of this beautiful attraction along the river. Let the dopers stay home, where they belong, and hide behind their drapes. We don’t need for the river walk area to become some kind of Haight-Ashbury hangout for potheads.
I hope all Wichitans will visit this area at least once. It’s beautiful. But when you do so, please do so respectfully.

Drilling rights
If self-imposed ignorance ever gets to $50 a barrel, I want drilling rights at the Sedgwick County Commission office.
