Letters on sales tax referendum, angel of mercy, ISIS

Public transit has saved my life

I live at the Timbers and use the Timber Lines transportation service to get out into the community. This transportation allows me to go shopping and to volunteer with Trees for Life. I feel like Timber Lines has saved my life. Without it, I would be sad and depressed about not being able to leave my apartment to do things I enjoy. I would miss seeing the friends I have made through volunteering.

I support the citywide sales tax to expand transportation. Expanding transportation will provide a better quality of life, not only for me but for others like me. Please vote “yes” this November.

Angel of mercy

I was involved in the motorcycle accident in Hutchinson Sunday. A lady on a trike motorcycle hit me from behind. I was able to regain control of my bike and come to a safe stop without being injured. The lady on the trike was in serious condition.

Before I could get off my bike and back to the scene, a nurse was already there. She took control of the situation and went to work on her patient. She performed CPR and got her breathing again. She provided lifesaving care until help arrived. I want to thank her for her skill, expert knowledge and calming presence during this tragic and chaotic event. She was a real heroine and angel of mercy.

Heroes are not actors or athletes. They are found in our military and in public service. They are our police, firemen, emergency medical service responders, doctors and nurses who save lives every day.

ISIS realist

Thank you to columnist Davis Merritt for his realistic assessment of the quagmire in the Middle East, as well as his prescient predictions for the media responses to President Obama’s address to the nation (“Americans not ready for the truth about ISIS,” Sept. 9 Opinion). Three points are worth memorizing: “The religious extremism that defines the Middle East has been going on for more than a thousand years. The West has been involved for more than 900 of those years.” “Anyone who believes a few months of bombing can eradicate this latest iteration of religious intolerance is living a fantasy.” And “this is going to be life in our world; learn to live with it.”
