Cigarette tax

In reply to a letter (Cigarette tax, May 28), the writer postulates that raising the cigarette tax by $1.50 per pack it will stop thousands of kids from starting and cause “tens of thousands” of smokers to quit smoking. He says this tax increase will result in a “big boost in new revenue” and that this new revenue will be reliable. How can higher taxes on “tens of thousands” fewer smokers result in a big boost in new and reliable revenue? Which is the fabrication? Whis isn’t? When they come out with this stuff, nobody questions it!

The writer cites polls that say the majority of Kansans favor this tax increase. Polls can be, and are, rigged to find what is wanted to be found. Remember that Hillary was going to win in a laugher election? All the polls said so. So much for polls.

When those who promote the same kinds of tax increases that smokers have had to endure on something they consume, I’ll believe they have a real concern for the budget shortfall and it not just vindictive.

Century II

Just wondering: Instead of knocking down beautiful Century II, didn’t anyone mention using the $294,000 for repairs and updating, then doing some fundraisers and donations for the balance of the work needed? So many of us love our landmark building. Ask and ye shall receive.

The president

An almost undefeated president has shown that he is brilliant and very astute to reading people. For everyone out there who thinks he has not spent a lifetime dealing with corrupt businessmen and politicians, they’re very foolish. He plays the media like a fiddle.

Let’s just see a year from now after all the special investigations that the Democrats asked for end up with charges against Holder, Lynch, Comey and the Clintons. The best thing about it is he doesn’t care if you’re a Democrat, Republican, or Independent, or if you’re a crook, if you’re stealing from the American taxpayers and betraying our country. He will run you over like the train that he is conducting. Look what he’s accomplished in four and a half months. What do you think it’ll look like in four years and then eight?

Riverfest

My family hasn’t attended Riverfest in a few years. We did this year since our daughter was performing. However, between $10 for a button when we didn't see a single concert, and security making us throw away a large drink we purchased from a vendor (five coupons) just because we walked from one section to another, I suspect it will be a few more years before we return. Felt like more of an outsider than a Sedgwick County resident.
