Letters on fear of teachers, school board bill, new airport

Why is Legislature afraid of teachers?

I’m not sure why the Legislature has painted a target on the back of teachers. When did teachers become the enemy?

Bills come before committees regularly attempting to limit the rights of those who choose to dedicate their lives to the young people of Kansas. What power do teachers have that creates such fear?

Is it because teachers encourage students to think, to weigh the evidence of all sides and create their own opinion? Is it because teachers encourage students to think before they act and not follow lockstep with the multitudes? Is it because teachers encourage students to read, discuss and research before they form opinions?

One would think the Legislature would desire an educated population in order for Kansas to move forward and not to repeat the failings of history.

What is it about teachers that strikes fear in the hearts of legislators?

Saving us?

Once more, members of the Legislature have stepped into the breach to save us from collectivism and bring us back to fiscal sanity.

Thursday, the House Education Committee is scheduled to consider a bill that would bar any teacher or his or her relatives from seeking election to any school board (Feb. 28 Eagle). Committee Chairman Ron Highland, R-Wamego, says it’s designed to prevent conflicts of interest.

At first blush, that may seem a bit extreme, but it really does make sense. It can’t be denied that teachers tend to march in lockstep for expensive causes, the most expensive of which is their insistence that tax money be used to support public education.

It’s an idea that opposes everything our state leaders are doing to stop the wasteful practice of throwing money at education. By keeping teachers off school boards, we could keep schools away from the public trough, and spend the tax dollars (from those of us who still pay them) on important things.

And if you’re one of those who still believe learning is important, just study the Legislature. That’ll set you straight.

Airport incredible

Flywichita.com, the website for the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, was recently updated and has a series of pictures of the new terminal being completed. I was taken aback by the pictures.

If you had any opposition to this project, go take a look at the pictures. If you are not excited about this new building and what it will mean to the image of Wichita, well, then, you probably don’t like babies or the smell of a puppy’s breath. It is incredible, even in its unfinished state.

I can’t wait to walk into this facility for the first time. This is an exciting time for Wichita and the flying public.

To further the image of flight in our history, I urge City Hall to purchase Columbine II, the Lockheed VC-121 Constellation 48-610 that Eisenhower used during his presidency. Additionally, the city needs to incorporate aviation into the new Kellogg/I-235 interchange and in other areas of this fine city. Aviation is our history and will be part of our future, and we should embrace it and capitalize on it.
