Brandon Johnson: Wichitans can get through coronavirus crisis together
We find ourselves in a surreal moment in America.
The very real threat of exposure to a virus that has shut down entire nations is upon us, and we continue to watch the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases within our own county and state rise each day.
We have witnessed several companies and some of our favorite local businesses announce layoffs or furloughs, or even close their doors, while others operate on a very limited basis, which is causing many to wonder where we go from here.
Although COVID-19 is serious and we may each have moments of despair, feeling overwhelmed or even afraid, it is in these moments that the true spirit of Wichita shines bright. Every day community members, nonprofit leaders and business owners come together to find ways to support those in need.
Organizations like the Greater Wichita Ministerial League have stepped up with the Kansas Food Bank and USD 259 to ensure our children and senior citizens are fed. Wichita Transit has partnered with Wichita Public Schools to allow students and their parents or guardians to ride free to 18 lunch sites throughout Wichita. The Wichita Community Foundation has started two efforts to support local non-profits and citizens in need, while several other organizations have formed collaborative efforts to support families in need.
It has been inspiring to see neighbors getting outside and talking to one another across the street, young people having socially distanced dance-offs outside, and people using technology in innovative ways to keep spirits lifted.
As we see more tests become available, we will see confirmed cases climb. As that happens, I encourage you not to panic but to simply stick to the plan to continue pushing toward flattening the curve:
- Stay at home unless you need to grab essentials.
- Properly social distance by keeping 6 feet between you and the next person.
- Keep your germs to yourself by coughing or sneezing into your elbow.
- Do not go to parties or large get-togethers.
- Wash your hands with soap and water regularly for 30 seconds.
- Stay hydrated.
Remember, the goal is to reduce potential transmission of the coronavirus, and the best way to do that is to stay home. If you have friends or family members who make light of the situation, remind them that we all have a responsibility to our fellow Wichitans to help reduce the spread.
One saying that helps get me through each day is: “It’s always darkest before dawn, but the sun always rises.”
There is no doubt that there will be tough times ahead and difficult decisions to be made, but I know that you and I can and will get through this together. Together we will make Wichita win!
Stay safe, stay healthy, and be sure to check on your neighbors, friends and family.
