Kansas views on credit downgrade, war on education, Bioscience Authority, Marshall
Credit downgrade – Last week’s downgrade of Kansas’ credit rating is the latest reminder of why Tuesday’s primaries matter so much. Voters need to select candidates, especially moderate Republicans, who will take the difficult actions required to stave off further financial ruin in the state.
How many more hints do citizens need before recognizing the feeble abilities of both the conservative majority in the Statehouse as well as Gov. Sam Brownback? Only Illinois, Kentucky and New Jersey have worse credit ratings than Kansas. It’s time to vote out every lawmaker who’s had a hand in creating the current mess.
War on education – Without a doubt, the war on public education in the Legislature is having a negative effect on Kansas teachers. They are tired of the fight over funding. They are discouraged by legislation that demeans them and their profession. Kansas has a proud tradition of support for public education. Those lawmakers who favor homeschooling or parochial education should turn their energy to the support of those options, and stop beating up on public school teachers.
Bioscience Authority – The demise of the Kansas Bioscience Authority is a clear step backward for Kansas. By selling off KBA’s assets, the state will raise some short-term cash but it will lose a venture that had the potential to be a long-term benefit to the state economy.
Marshall – As a leading farm state, Kansas deserves the best possible representation on the agriculture front. The Sunflower State has received far less from the incumbent representing the sprawling 1st Congressional District. Challenger Roger Marshall deserves support in Tuesday’s GOP primary.
