New Year’s Day snow falls in Wichita with more predicted to come
Sleet was followed by snow Saturday morning in the Wichita area, with more snow expected to fall throughout the morning, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita.
Sleet was first reported at the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport at 7:28 a.m. There was 0.2 inches of snow by around 9 a.m.
A Kansas Highway Patrol dispatch supervisor said the number of weather-related crashes throughout the state was pretty typical for the amount of snow that had fallen so far. She said crashes were widespread. She would not elaborate more.
The KHP crash log showed two weather-related, injury accidents across the state through 10:22 a.m. Troopers could still be inputting information on others. The injuries were minor in both accidents. One was reported in Sedgwick County and happened around 6 a.m. as the driver of an SUV went from southbound I-135 to eastbound Kellogg.
The NWS predicts light snow in the Wichita area for the rest of the morning, heavier snow northwest of the area and a wintry mix east of Eureka.
