Pea-sized hail falls in Sedgwick County, and winds and cold weather expected to follow
Pea-sized hail started falling in Sedgwick County on Saturday evening.
The National Weather Service in Wichita issued a severe thunderstorm watch at around 5:35 p.m. for a forward-slashing line cutting from south-central Kansas up unto the Kansas City area. A few minutes later, the NWS said pea-sized hail was reported near Goddard as the storm headed east.
Later, the NWS retweeted a video of someone showing pea-sized hail in northwest Wichita. Julie Mah, with The Eagle, also tweeted about hail near 21st and Ridge.
Sedgwick County is under the severe thunderstorm watch until 11 p.m. The NWS said hail could be lime sized and wind gusts up to 70 mph.
A cold front is expected to move into the area Sunday with wind gusts as high as 55 mph in Wichita, the NWS said. The cooler-than-normal temperatures are expected to continue “well into next week ... we’re talking multiple days of lows in the 20s and 30s here in central/eastern KS,” the NWS said.
