Forecasters are warning of the possibility of a “potentially significant” severe weather outbreak across the central part of the country on Monday that may affect portions of Kansas, including the Wichita area.

AccuWeather meteorologists are predicting thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, hail, tornadoes and floods starting on Sunday from Texas to Minnesota and Wisconsin, with an increased risk Monday from Oklahoma to Wisconsin.

“Atmospheric conditions will be able to support volatile supercell thunderstorms capable of producing intense tornadoes, destructive wind gusts and very large hail,” AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Duffus said in a statement.

“The threat is expected to peak Monday afternoon and evening as heat, moisture and powerful wind energy combine to create an environment favorable for a few strong to intense tornadoes,” he said, adding that Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Omaha and other major metropolitan areas could be affected.

“People across the threat zone should have a plan and a safe place to shelter if a tornado warning is issued.”

The National Weather Service in Wichita is predicting a slight to enhanced risk of severe weather in Kansas starting late Monday afternoon. Wichita is included in the enhanced risk area. Large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain are possible, the weather service says.

Mostly sunny skies and highs in the 90s are expected for Wichita over the weekend. There’s a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms overnight Sunday into Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
