Hail, wind, tornadoes possible for south-central KS on Sunday. Here are details

After large hail and a torrent of rain swept through central and south-central Kansas Saturday, forecasters are warning that more severe weather could be in store for Wichita and other parts of Kansas on Sunday.

Sunday’s outlook includes two rounds of severe storms with damaging winds, large hail and potential tornadoes.

Sunday’s first potential storm could appear in late afternoon, with a second, more intense storm expected after 8 p.m. Large hail, between quarter-size and 2 inches, is possible, and winds between 60 and 70 mph are expected.

A few tornadoes are also possible, the report said, mostly over south central Kansas. The Wichita station urged residents to practice weather-preparedness and to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.

As a precaution, McConnell Air Force Base said Saturday that crews were moving the base’s KC-46A Pegasus and KC-135R Stratotanker planes to other military bases across the U.S. to “ensure the aircraft maintain full readiness to support current and future tasked missions, while also avoiding any potential damage should the forecasted severe weather achieve its full upper potential.” Other aircraft, flightline vehicles and equipment will be stored in hangars.

This is the fourth time in the past eight weeks that the base has moved planes in response to stormy forecasts, John Van Winkle, chief of public affairs for the base, said by email.

The weekend weather predictions come on the heels of severe storms Thursday that produced hail, landspouts and a few tornados in portions of Oklahoma and Kansas, including one that damaged some cabins at Lake Kahola in Morris County. The Chase County Sheriff’s Office said no one was hurt at the lake, which is about 95 miles northeast of downtown Wichita.

Crews at McConnell Air Force Base relocate planes to other military bases ahead of storms predicted on April 1. They also moved aircraft ahead of severe weather forecasted for Saturday and Sunday.
