Cooler temperatures to move into Wichita Thanksgiving week. Will they stay?
After the second unseasonably warm November in a row, Wichita residents can expect fairly normal Thanksgiving temperatures this year.
Nov. 1 through Nov. 20 saw an average temperature of a little more than 5 degrees Fahrenheit above normal for this time of year — but it was a bit cooler compared to last November. Now, cooler temps are moving into the area for the holiday week, and forecasters expect them to hang around.
“We get 60 [degrees] on Saturday and Sunday. But once we get past that, it looks like the odds of us getting 60s and 70s for highs go away,” said Robb Lawson, a forecaster at the National Weather Service’s Wichita office.
Here’s a look at Thanksgiving week’s weather forecast from the NWS:
- Sunday, Nov. 23: Partly sunny with a high around 63 degrees and a low of 50. There’s a chance of precipitation beginning after noon.
- Monday, Nov. 24: A 50% chance of showers with a high around 62 and a low around 43.
- Tuesday, Nov. 25: Sunny with a high of about 54 and a low of 32.
- Wednesday. Nov. 26: Mostly sunny with a high around 48 and a low of 31.
- Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 27: Partly cloudy with a high in the 50s.
Thanksgiving Day’s high is lower than average, Lawson said, but not by much.
“The normal high is about 55 and we’ll be 53 or so, yeah, that’s kind of an average high temperature,” the forecaster noted.
A warm November in Wichita
Like last year, this November has been unseasonably warm.
“Last year, we [were] just a smidge warmer, actually, than we were this year through the 20th,” Lawson said.
In addition, the area has also seen above-average precipitation, including the 1.02 inches of rain Wichita got Nov. 20.
“The whole area got over an inch of rain, which is really good,” Lawson said.
While there were several days this November that saw highs in the 70s, the first snow of the season could be not far off, with the average first snow falling the first week of December.
