Heavy rain, large hail, possibly a tornado in Kansas forecast. Here’s when and where
Forecasters are predicting severe storms and flooding for much of the region, including Wichita, overnight into Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service says storms carrying the possibility of heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large hail will likely develop after midnight.
There is also a slight chance for brief tornadic activity late Monday night into early Tuesday morning, according to NWS.
Severe storms are expected after 1 a.m. through 8 a.m. Tuesday. Hazards include heavy rainfall, flooding, 60-65 mph wind gusts and ping pong ball-sized hail, the NWS said.
Heavy rainfall and possible flooding is forecast for 4 a.m. to noon Tuesday.
Forecasters anticipate widespread rainfall totals between one and two inches, with pockets of higher amounts possible, the NWS said.
There is also a 2-9% chance for tornadoes mainly along and south of a line extending through Great Bend, Hutchinson, El Dorado and Independence. Wichita has a slight chance, around 2-4%. The possibility of a brief tornado is higher across southern portions of Sedgwick County, at 5-9%, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
Tornado potential is forecasted through 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Storms will move into the region from the west, with most locations affected after 3 a.m., the National Weather Service says. Hail is expected to be the main severe threat.
