  • Flood watch issued for central and eastern Kansas from Wednesday night to Thursday.
  • Rainfall totals may reach 3 to 5 inches in Flint Hills and southeast Kansas areas.
  • National Weather Service advises caution near rivers, streams and low-lying zones.

A flood watch is going into effect ahead of expected heavy rainfall across central and eastern Kansas, the National Weather Service said.

Counties included in the watch are Sedgwick, Butler, Harvey and Reno, as well as Allen, Chase, Ellsworth, Elk, Greenwood, Labette, Marion, McPherson, Montgomery, Neosho, Rice, Saline, Wilson and Woodson.

The watch will be in effect from 7 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday afternoon.

“Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Low-water crossings may be flooded,” the weather service said.

Isolated hail is also a possibility.

Another round of thunderstorms is expected sometime between 9 p.m. and midnight, with the heaviest rain after midnight into Thursday morning.

Meteorologists think the heaviest rainfall will be across the Flint Hills and in southeast Kansas, but the flooding risk could expand to the Wichita metro area.

Rainfall amounts are expected to be 1 or 2 inches across the area, with 3 to 5 inches or more in some places.

The weather service says modest to significant rises in river and stream waters may occur, and those nearby should prepare accordingly. To avoid potential flash floods, get to higher ground, avoid driving or walking into flooded areas and monitor local forecasts for updates.
