Wichita could see a mix of heavy rain, strong winds and hail Monday night into Tuesday — and again Tuesday into Wednesday

The chance for severe weather Monday is stronger west of Wichita. There is a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms in Wichita after 10 p.m., the National Weather Service said. If there is severe weather, residents could see 60-70 mph wind gusts and half-dollar-sized hail.

The high for Monday is at 89 degrees, with an overnight low of 70, an NWS detailed forecast shows.

Tuesday’s storm chances in Wichita start slim with a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 p.m., but increase to 50% in the evening into the night. The high for the day is expected to be 92, with a low of 70.

“Any storm that develops Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday evening will be capable of tennis-size hail, damaging winds up to 80 mph and tornadoes,” an NWS hazardous weather outlook says. “The storm hazards will transition to damaging winds and heavy rainfall Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.”

Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall Tuesday night, the NWS said.

In addition to the chance for severe weather, Tuesday’s heat index value could reach 100 degrees. That also is forecast for Friday and Saturday in Wichita.

The heat value index is “a measure of how hot it feels to the human body when relative humidity is combined with the actual air temperature,” according to the NWS.

The heat is not abnormal for this time of year, but recent rainfall has contributed to moisture in the air.

“As a result, a lot of that water is evaporating and causing that humidity,” NWS Wichita meteorologist James Cuellar said.

Wednesday is expected to have a high of 88 and a low of 73. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are forecast in the 90s with lows in the 70s, according to an NWS forecast.
