Rain, strong winds, hail are in this weekend’s forecast for the Wichita area

It may be a rainy Memorial Day weekend.

“Another round of thunderstorms are expected to move across the area tonight. Some of these storms could become severe and produce large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall,” a hazardous weather outlook by the National Weather Service in Wichita said. “An active weather pattern is expected to bring multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms to the region for this weekend through Monday.”

The severe weather is forecast throughout the state.

In the Wichita area, on Friday, there is a chance of rain and thunder all afternoon before the likelihood jumps from a “chance” to “likely” between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Saturday. The concern for Friday night, starting after 7 p.m., is 70 mph gusts and golf-ball-size hail.

The potential for rain increases to occasional, the highest designation, starting at around 8 p.m. Saturday, when large hail and damaging winds are forecast.

The chances of rain drops off at around 8 a.m. Sunday morning but rain throughout the day is still possible before increasing back to occasional at 1 a.m. Monday.

That will taper off at around 7 a.m. on Monday but still be “likely” until early afternoon and then drop down to a chance.

The highest concentration of rain over the holiday weekend is forecast for early Monday morning. The forecast shows about 0.37 inches between 1 a.m. and around 7 a.m. Monday.

The heavy rainfall could lead to some flooding issues, with the biggest concern for that being in southeast Kansas.

Wichita is forecast to see 1.5 to 2 inches of rain between Friday and Sunday night. Coffeyville is expected to get between 4 and 6 inches.
