High winds, large hail: Here’s when severe weather could hit Wichita & what to expect
Forecasters have given a more detailed timeline for when the Wichita area can expect severe weather Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
The Wichita area could see tornadoes, winds with 60-75 mph gusts and up to tennis-ball sized hail.
Additionally, the area in south-central Kansas with the highest chance of severe weather has been extended farther south to the Kansas-Oklahoma state line, according to the National Weather Service.
Wichita falls into a band across the state most likely to see severe weather from 8 p.m. to midnight. Wichita is in an area rated 3 out of 0 to 5, with 5 being the highest chance of severe storms. The area in a 3 extends northeast to Topeka before dropping to a 2.
The area just east and south of Wichita is most likely to see severe weather between 11 p.m. until 5 a.m.
The highest chances of rain and thunder in Wichita are between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Wednesday, according to the forecast as of 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Southerly winds are expected to start picking up in the afternoon on Tuesday.
“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects,” the NWS in Wichita said in an advisory on Tuesday morning. “Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.”
