Wichita forecast: wintry mix, more snow after that and then coldest temps of the season

Wichita’s forecast for the next week is bleak.

Wichita could see some wintry mix, including a freezing drizzle or light snow, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service in Wichita said at 2:40 p.m. on Friday.

Any snow is expected to be half an inch or less.

“While we are not looking for a significant winter event, freezing drizzle or light snow may result in a few slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses,” the NWS said.

Additionally, the “chances for accumulating snow are increasing” on Monday night and into Tuesday, the NWS said. That storm could bring up to 4 inches in some areas, but it’s not yet clear where, NWS meteorologist Jerod Kaufman said.

The big concern then is about the extremely cold weather, colder than anything we have seen so far this season, Kaufman said.

“In terms of magnitude, we saw this several years ago, but it is not something that is expected this time of year, at all,” he said.

Wind chills between minus 10 and minus 25 “will be common” between Tuesday through Thursday morning, the NWS said.

Tuesday is expected to stay between single digits lows to highs in the teens. Wednesday has a high of 8 degrees and a low just a few degrees below that, he said.

Thursday has a high of around 18 degrees, and then Friday could be in the mid 20s, he said.
