Winter weather in Wichita: the timing, predicted snowfall totals, wind chills

Snow and bitter cold wind chills will arrive a little later than initially expected in Wichita and south-central Kansas, but they’re on the way.

Predicted snowfall totals for Wichita have dropped a little: 2-3 inches is expected now.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service in Wichita said.

“Snow will develop tonight becoming heavy at times, especially during the morning hours on Wednesday,” the weather service said Tuesday.

Wichita has a 90% chance of snow after 3 a.m., when the area could see between 1 to 2 inches of snow. Tuesday’s nighttime low is forecast at 21 degrees, a detailed forecast shows.

Wednesday has an 80% chance of snow showers before noon, with snow accumulation anywhere from 1 to 3 inches. The high for the day is expected to be 23 with a low of 9.

All together, Wichita is forecast to see between 2 to 3 inches of total snowfall between 9 p.m. Tuesday to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Areas up north, including Topeka, Salina and Russell, could see 6 to 8 inches.

Wednesday’s snow will be accompanied with a wind chill of 6 degrees, and Thursday’s wind chill value is forecast at -2.

Travel conditions for Wichita could be hazardous, and drivers are urged to use caution. Some closures and disruptions are possible, the NWS said.

Up north along I-70, travel conditions could become dangerous. Widespread road and highways closures could happen.

Thursday’s high is forecast at a sunny high of 24 and low of 12. Friday is expected at a mostly cloudy high of 42, with a low of 30. Saturday could see a cloudy high of 40 and a low of 12.

Due to expected snow, the Sedgwick County Zoo will be closed Wednesday, Feb. 12, the zoo said in an email.
