Snow in the forecast for Wichita, Kansas: Latest details on when & where
Wichita and a wide swath of Kansas will be under a winter storm watch from 6 p.m. Tuesday until Wednesday afternoon, with from 3 to 5 inches of snow expected.
The National Weather Service issued the watch for these counties in central, south central and southeast Kansas: Sedgwick, Butler, Harvey, Allen, Chase, Greenwood, Kingman, McPherson, Marion, Reno, Rice, Woodson.
“Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes,” the weather service said.
Snow is expected to start falling in Wichita by 6 p.m. Tuesday and let up by noon Wednesday. Wichita has a 50% chance of seeing 4 or more inches of snow through Wednesday.
A detailed forecast for Tuesday shows a 20% chance of snow before noon, and then a 100% chance of snow mainly after midnight. The high for the day is forecast at 32 degrees, with a low of 20.
Wednesday will continue that trend with a 90% chance of snow before noon before coming to a halt. The high for the day is expected at 22, with a low of 7.
Wind chill values for Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be -1 and 4, respectively.
Central Kansas could see the brunt of the snow storm. This area may see up to 8 inches of snow and dangerous driving conditions may cause road closures, the NWS said Monday.
Snow accumulation could be anywhere from 4 to 10 inches, with the heaviest snow expected north of Wichita between U.S. 56 and I-70.
During this time, “travel could be very difficult,” the NWS warned.
In Wichita, Thursday is forecast at a mostly sunny high of 23, with a low of 12. Friday will be mostly cloudy at 38, with a low of 28.
