Updated: Wichita-area schools, services closing because of the winter storm

Blowing snow continued in Wichita on Sunday afternoon in the midst of a blizzard warning, making driving hazardous.

Because of the storm, several social services, schools and others have closed or announced closures for Monday.

Here’s a quick look at some of the closures. If you have additions for the list, you can email them to online@wichitaeagle.com.

Wichita public schools

Wichita public schools, including non-attendance centers, will be closed Monday. Snow removal crews and SSC-based security officers will receive specific instructions.

Wichita State University

The university will move to “remote operations” on Monday, Jan. 6, according to an email.

“Critical campus operations will remain open, and employees who support these operations are expected to report to campus,” the university said. “All other employees should work remotely when possible. Pre-session classes will be moved to remote delivery.”

Friends University

All in-person classes, campus activities, and operations are suspended at the Wichtia and Kansas City campuses.

KU School of Medicine-Wichita and its clinics

KU School of Medicine-Wichita and its clinics will be closed Monday. If students have questions, they shoul contact the office of Academic and Student Affairs.

Ascension Medical Group Via Christi

“All Ascension Medical Group Via Christi clinics, Via Christi Physical Therapy Centers and Via Christi Occupational Health locations in the Wichita and surrounding areas (Andover, Mulvane, Wellington, Derby) will be closed on Monday,” Ascension said in an email.

Surgeries at Founders’ Surgery Center (1961 N. Founders Circle) and in Via Christi hospitals will continue unless otherwise the patient is otherwise contacted.

The zoo, 5555 Zoo Blvd., will be closed Monday and Tuesday.

Sedgwick County offices

• The tag offices inside the Kansas Driver’s License Stations in west Wichita, 610 S. Tyler, and Derby, 620 N. Rock Road, Suite 300, are closed.
• Register of Deeds east office, inside the Kellogg Tag Office, 5620 E. Kellogg.
• Register of Deeds main office, 100 N. Broadway, Suite 105, will open at noon until 5 p.m.
• Department of Aging & Disabilities has canceled transportation services today.
• Election Office, 510 N. Main, #101, is closed.

All other Sedgwick County offices are open Monday, including the Sedgwick County Courthouse and District Courts.

Wichita Airport

Wichita’s airport is warning travelers of possible delays and cancellations. If your flight at the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport gets canceled, instead of showing up to the airport, the airport says to call your airline of choice and reschedule your flight. If your flight gets delayed, still go to the airport, but bring a refillable water bottle and a small snack in your carry-on in case it’s delayed more.
