Wichita broke another heat record for October on Monday, marking the third to be broken in a week.

The temperature at Wichita’s Eisenhower Airport hit 90 degrees. It was the latest 90-degree day in Wichita since records began in 1888, the National Weather Service said on X.

The previous Oct. 28 record was 83 degrees in 2016, the weather service’s Wichita field office said.

Highs around 66 to 68 degrees are normal for this time of year, according to the NWS.

The first record broken for October 2024 was on Tuesday, Oct. 22. This day hit 88 degrees, surpassing the previous Oct. 22 record of 87 degrees set last year and equaled in 2022, 2020 and 1899, Wichita NWS meteorologist Andy Kleinsasser previously said.

The second came on Thursday, Oct. 24. This day reached a high of 92 degrees. The prior record of 89 degrees was set on Oct. 24, 1939, NWS archives show.

The abnormally high temperatures placed Wichita and surrounding areas under a red flag warning for Monday and Tuesday, an NWS advisory said. A mix of strong winds and low humidity could spark grassland fires across the warning areas.

“A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly,” the NWS said. “A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.”
