Wichita’s snowfall on Friday had broken a 95-year-old record by around 10 a.m. with more snow expected to fall through the afternoon.

The National Weather Service said on social media at noon that it had measured 3.3 inches of snowfall at Wichita Eisenhower National Airport, breaking the previous record for Jan. 5 of 2.6 inches set in 1929. Records in Wichita date back to 1888.

Minor additional accumulations were anticipated through the afternoon, the weather service said.

The heaviest of the snowfall was expected to stop at around 11 a.m.

“We’ll see it lighten up in the afternoon with light accumulation of that” snow, Pearce said.

The winter weather started with rain before 4 a.m. but included a mix of snow within 30 minutes before changing to just snowfall.
