The high heat Wichita saw at the start of the week is forecast to stick around much longer.

Wichita hit 102 degrees on Tuesday and will be close to the century mark the rest of this week with expected highs of 98 or 99, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita.

The city was under a heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service for much of Tuesday, and another one will run from noon to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the agency.

The heat index values will be between 100-110 for Wednesday through Friday. Heat index values are “are taking into account how the combination of the heat and humidity makes the body feel like,” the NWS said.

A National Weather Service heat index chart shows the 100 to 110 range for Wichita in the “danger” section. This poses the risk of possible heat stroke, cramps and heat exhaustion to occur.

Going into the weekend, Saturday is forecast for a high of 99 while Sunday could see Wichita hitting triple digits again. Stretching it further into next week, Monday and Tuesday are expected to see a high of 101, a forecast shows.

Those looking to beat the heat have several options offered by the City of Wichita. From Wednesday to Saturday, residents can ride Wichita transit buses for free, the release said.

Residents are also encouraged to visit the city resource centers, which are open to the public, are air-conditioned and have water.
