Fairer weather may be coming to Wichita for New Year’s weekend, just over a week after severe winter conditions led to slick roads and the city’s first ”snow squall” since the term was defined in 2018.

National Weather Service forecasters wrote in a Dec. 27 tweet the Wichita area would likely see breezy weather and warmer than typical temperatures in coming days.

Here’s what Wichita residents can expect weather-wise for New Year’s weekend, with forecasts from the local NWS office and AccuWeather, along with a regional look ahead from the Farmers’ Almanac.

New Year’s weather in Wichita

Wichita residents planning to celebrate New Year’s can look forward to relatively mild weather for the holiday weekend, according to local forecasts.

The NWS Wichita office forecasts a partly sunny New Year’s Eve with temperatures ranging from 32 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit and partly cloudy conditions at night.

New Year’s Day will be partly sunny with a high around 51 degrees, while the night of Jan. 1 will be mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of rain and a low of about 40 degrees, the NWS says.

AccuWeather forecasts a ”mostly cloudy and mild” New Year’s Eve in Wichita, with a 16% chance of precipitation and temperatures ranging from 31 to 56 degrees.

New Year’s Day will be mostly cloudy, AccuWeather predicts, with a 7% chance of rain and expected temperatures between 41 and 51 degrees.

Farmers’ Almanac predictions

The Farmers’ Almanac has also released New Year’s Eve weather predictions for Kansas, along with forecasts across the U.S. and Canada.

Kansas is in the almanac’s “Zone 4” with Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. The almanac’s Zone 4 prediction reads: “Mostly fair as year comes to an end.”

The almanac makes predictions based on a mysterious formula that considers factors such as planetary positioning, sunspot activity and tidal action of the moon.

“The only person who knows the exact formula is the Farmers’ Almanac weather prognosticator who goes by the pseudonym of Caleb Weatherbee,” the organization’s website says. “To protect this proprietary formula, the editors of the Farmers’ Almanac prefer to keep both Caleb’s true identity and the formula a closely guarded brand secret.”
