Tuesday marked the hottest day of the year in Wichita with a high of 107.

But that wasn’t a record. It fell two degrees short of breaking the July 19 record set in 2006.

The scorching temperatures come in one of the the months Kansas historically sees its highest temperatures, according to National Weather Service data going back to 1888.

Wednesday hit 99 degrees before 3 p.m. The rest of the week’s high temperatures could span from 100-103 degrees, according to a local National Weather Service forecast.

Meteorologist Chris Jakub said relief could be on the way starting next Wednesday, when temperatures could dip below 100 degrees.

“On average, the Wichita area will experience eleven days of temperatures at 100 degrees or hotter,” Jakub said.

July has seen some of Kansas’ hottest temperatures, according to NWS data dating back to 1888. July saw 14 days of temperatures of 110 degrees or higher. August has 10 days of record highs of 110 or over.

The hottest day ever in Kansas was 114 degrees on Aug. 12, 1936.

Jakub says 100-plus degree temperatures will continue into August, and possibly into early to mid-September.
