It reached nearly 90 degrees yesterday in Wichita and now there is expected to be snow today.

Around 9 a.m., the National Weather Service in Wichita tweeted that it could snow over the next couple of hours. It will be a light snow but can accumulate on “elevated or grassy surfaces, but minimal impacts are expected,” the NWS said in a tweet.

NWS meteorologist James Cuellar said it would be gone by noon.

Videos and photos show it was already snowing by 9:15 a.m. in Hutchinson and Newton.

Wichita hit 87 degrees on Tuesday before 4 p.m., according to NWS data. Cuellar said the warm weather would ensure Wednesday’s snow wouldn’t stick.

He said Kansas and surrounding states are prone to large temperature and weather swings during the spring.

“It’s just one of those deals,” he said, “kind of typical early springtime weather.”

It’s not unheard of to have snow in April. The April 13 record measured at the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport was 0.5 inches in 2007. Records date back to 1888.

The latest measured snowfall at the airport was 0.2 inches on April 23, 2013.
