Weather alert: Tuesday forecast includes damaging winds and hail in parts of Kansas
Kansas could see two rounds of severe storms starting Tuesday evening, National Weather Service meteorologist James Cuellar says.
The first is forecast to last from 4 to 8 p.m. and affect areas east of I-135 from Saline to Sedgwick counties, Cuellar said.
The storm could bring damaging winds, large hail and the threat of tornadoes. These would be “very isolated storms,” Cuellar said, and currently there is a 20 percent chance of the storms occurring.
“If the storms do develop, they’re going to be few and far between,” Cuellar said.
The second round of storms is predicted to start shortly after 8 p.m. and last overnight in the same area. Chances for this storm sit higher at 60 percent. Damaging winds and quarter-sized hail will be the main threat, Cuellar said.
The Wichita area is looking at a 30 percent chance of scattered storms expected to move in after 10 p.m., with the possibility of a line of storms north and northeast of Wichita during that period as well.
In addition to possible storms, the National Weather Service has issued a fire danger warning for the area west of I-135 until Tuesday evening. Wind gusts could reach as high as 60 mph in the area, Cuellar said.
Strong winds and low humidity could quickly ignite a fire, and people should avoid any activity that could cause a spark, the National Weather Service said.
