Are you ready, Wichita? Freezing rain, sleet and snow are in the forecast

Enjoy the warmer weather for one more day in the Wichita area: More snow is on the way starting Wednesday night, according to a meteorologist.

“I can say with confidence there’s going to be a band of probably at least six inches or more of snow somewhere across central or south-central Kansas. It’s just trying to determine where it’s going to fall,” National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Darmofal said.

The Wichita area could expect to see “a couple inches of snow” starting early Thursday morning, he said.

The storm could start as early as Wednesday afternoon with rain and thunder. That could then turn into freezing rain and sleet Wednesday night, Darmofal said.

The freezing rain and sleet could cause slick road conditions. The worst travel impact from the storm is expected to be from midnight Wednesday through noon on Thursday, Darmofal said.

Strong winds of 30 to 40 mph could put the wind chill around zero degrees Thursday morning.

The snow is expected to let up by Thursday early afternoon, according to Darmofal. The National Weather Service website shows that temperatures will be near 30 on Thursday, and 46 on Friday.

The Wichita area last saw around 5 to 7 inches of snow in the beginning of February.
