Here’s what drivers can expect as they head out Thursday morning after the snowfall

The snowfall in Wichita will come to a stop overnight Thursday, but negative wind chill will affect travel Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service in Wichita forecasts a wind chill of 10-15 below zero overnight and Thursday morning, meteorologist Chris Jakub said.

That means that nothing will melt overnight, he added.

“Drivers should expect slick conditions — with packed snow and frigid temperatures — tomorrow morning,” KDOT spokesperson Tim Potter said.

KDOT officials encourage people to stay off the road. Those who must travel are advised to use caution and slow down.

In Wichita, city crews continue to plow roads and treat with salt and sand. The main roads in the city are passable, said Megan Lovely, city of Wichita communications manager.

That could change with additional snow accumulation and wind chills Wednesday night, she said.

The Wichita area had received 6.5 to 7.5 inches of snow by about 6 p.m. Less than an inch of snow accumulation is expected Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service.

KDOT was able to make some progress Wednesday on roads – getting at least one lane cleared in many places, Potter said.

“This storm has been difficult to deal with because we got rain, then sleet and then snow. So we’re having to chisel it off,” he said.

Thursday will see a slight chance of snow with a negative wind chill of 14 during the day. Thursday night will gradually start to clear up with a low around 3 degrees, according to a meteorologist. Friday will see a major change to sunny with a high of 30.
