Snow broke weather record in Wichita last week. More could fall in Kansas this week

National Weather Service meteorologists are predicting snow will fall in central Kansas during the middle of the week. The winter storm would come a week after a snowfall record was broken in Wichita.

In a hazardous weather outlook issued Monday morning, forecasters at the weather service’s Wichita office predicted that “a mix of rain and snow is possible Wednesday afternoon across parts of central Kansas.” Light snow is expected to fall across most of the area Wednesday night.

An NWS Wichita map showed snowfall amounts are expected to be less than an inch.

The Wednesday night into Thursday morning storm is expected to drop more snow in western Kansas than in central Kansas.

In Wichita specifically, the NWS forecast calls for a 40% chance of precipitation, starting with rain before 7 p.m., then rain and snow, then snow after 10 p.m. The low temperature will be around 23 degrees.

The NWS office in Goodland predicts a few inches of snow are possible in the tri-state area of northwest Kansas, northeast Colorado and southwest Nebraska. In southwest Kansas, the NWS office in Dodge City predicts a widespread 2 inches or more of snow. In northeast Kansas, the NWS Topeka office predicts only a slight chance for snow.

Western Kansas is also expected to receive snowfall Monday night into Tuesday.

More snow is in the Sunday morning forecast for central Kansas.

The snow forecasts come after central Kansas was placed under a winter weather advisory last week before snow and rain fell across the region, followed by sub-freezing temperatures and wind chills below zero degrees. The 2.1 inches of snow recorded at Eisenhower National Airport in west Wichita broke the Feb. 12 snowfall record.

The weather conditions contributed to a Wednesday morning Wichita Public Schools bus crash on I-35 that hurt 27 elementary school students, which was followed by an ambulance crash on the slushy interstate less than an hour later.
