See how snow has blanketed parts of Kansas
Rain turned to snow in Wichita early Tuesday afternoon. By then, parts of western Kansas had already seen inches of snow as a winter storm system moved across the state.
A meteorologist in Goodland did a timelapse video of snow dropping during an hour and 45-minute window, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. The video started with snow covering patches of the lawn to blanketing the yard.
During that time window, but in Central Time zone (Goodland is Mountain Time), a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper tweeted from Liberal in southwest Kansas, where troopers were working a commercial vehicle slide-off on a snow-covered U.S. 54.
The National Weather Service tweeted the Dodge City Regional Airport recorded 5.2 inches of snowfall as of 10 a.m.
Roughly 30 minutes later, and about 70 miles to the east, Great Bend had about an inch on the ground, the NWS said.
Julie Mah, at The Eagle, caught some of the first snowflakes in downtown Wichita at around 12:30 p.m.
At 12:45 p.m., the NWS said precipitation has “transitioned to mostly snow for areas generally along and west of I-135.” The post also said it was not “out of the question to see some sleet” and western parts of Reno and Kingman counties could see snowfall rates approaching an inch per hour.
The snowfall in Wichita started to pick up at around 3 p.m. From shortly before noon to 2:53 p.m., the NWS reported around .05 inches of total precipitation fell at the Wichita Eisenhower National Airport.
NWS Wichita tweeted at around 3:55 p.m. that snow-covered roads would become more “common across the area late this afternoon.”
The Reno County Sheriff’s Office advised people to slow down on commutes home.
NWS Wichita said another inch or two of “slushy snow” is possible throughout the night.
Some Kansans found ways to enjoy the snowfall.
