Snow, rain in the Wichita weather forecast for Monday night, Tuesday morning

A winter storm that will be moving through central Kansas is expected to drop rain and snow Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service office in Wichita said in a hazardous weather outlook that a light wintry mix is predicted with the storm.

“Snow accumulations are expected to remain under one inch, with the best chance of accumulating snow west of a line from Lincoln to Hutchinson to Wellington,” the weather service said.

In Wichita specifically, the NWS forecast calls for sunny skies with a high near 47 degrees on Monday. A 40% chance of precipitation overnight starts with rain and snow around midnight, then snow after 5 a.m. The low temperature will be around the freezing point, with winds of up to 10 mph.

A 40% chance of precipitation continues with snow until around 1 p.m. Tuesday, transitioning to a slight chance of rain and snow until 3 p.m., then a small chance of rain. The daytime high will be near 39 degrees with wind speeds of up to 10 mph.

A predicted overnight low of around 27 degrees would mean any moisture on roads could freeze by the Wednesday morning commute. Any ice should melt with the daytime high near 45 degrees.
